Docker VPS hosting for self-hosted containers
Docker hosting can mean two very different products: a managed container platform that operates the infrastructure for you, or a VPS where you install and operate Docker yourself. inCloudServer’s fit is the second model: general-purpose self-managed VPS infrastructure for teams that want control of the Linux server and container stack.
Docker is not advertised as preinstalled on these VPS plans. Choose a compatible Linux environment, verify current operating-system availability, then install Docker Engine and Docker Compose using Docker’s current documentation.
Which VPS should you choose for Docker?
Size the server for the containers you will actually run, not for Docker by itself. Databases, application runtimes, caches, queues, search services, AI tooling and build jobs can consume far more resources than the Docker daemon.
| Current VPS example |
Planning use |
What to verify |
| 2 vCPU / 4 GB RAM / 100 GB SSD |
Smaller container stacks and development workloads. |
Combined memory for every container, database and host process. |
| 2 vCPU / 8 GB RAM / 100 GB SSD |
Stacks that need more memory without additional CPU. |
Database/cache memory, concurrent jobs and image/storage growth. |
| 4 vCPU / 8 GB RAM / 200 GB SSD |
More CPU-intensive application stacks or multiple services. |
CPU concurrency, build workloads and persistent-volume I/O. |
| 8 vCPU / 16 GB RAM / 400 GB SSD |
Larger self-hosted stacks that need more compute and storage. |

Docker Compose on a VPS
Docker documents Compose as a way to define and run multi-container applications. For production, Docker recommends adapting development Compose configuration for the production environment—for example, using production-specific settings, restart policies, appropriate port bindings and environment variables. See Docker’s production Compose guidance.
Docker VPS deployment checklist
- Choose a Linux distribution currently supported by Docker Engine and available on the VPS.
- Install Docker Engine from Docker’s supported repository or another currently supported method.
- Install the Docker Compose plugin if your stack uses Compose.
- Use persistent volumes or external storage for data that must survive container replacement.
- Keep secrets out of images and source repositories.
- Expose only the ports the application requires and configure the host firewall.
- Put public HTTP services behind HTTPS and a properly configured reverse proxy when appropriate.
- Set restart policies for services that must recover after a host or daemon restart.
- Back up databases, persistent volumes and deployment configuration.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk usage, logs and container health.
Docker security responsibilities
A self-managed VPS means you own the operating-system and Docker security work. Docker notes that membership in the docker group grants root-level privileges, and its security documentation covers the daemon attack surface, namespaces, cgroups and seccomp. Review Docker’s Engine security guidance before exposing a production server.
Docker VPS vs a managed container platform
| Docker VPS |
Managed container platform |
| You administer the server, Docker Engine, networking, security and backups. |
The platform abstracts more of the server and orchestration layer. |
| More server-level control and flexibility. |
Less infrastructure administration. |
| Best when your team is comfortable operating Linux and containers. |
Best when deployment convenience matters more than host-level control. |

Frequently asked questions
Is Docker preinstalled on these VPS plans?
No claim is made that Docker is preinstalled. These are self-managed VPS plans; install Docker using a compatible operating system and the current official Docker instructions.
How much RAM does Docker hosting need?
Docker itself is only part of the workload. Add together the memory required by every container, database, cache and host service, then leave headroom for bursts and updates.
Can I use Docker Compose?
Yes when your selected operating system and Docker installation support the current Compose plugin. Docker publishes Linux installation and production Compose documentation.
Is self-managed Docker hosting right for beginners?
Only if you are prepared to learn Linux administration, networking, security, backups and container operations. A managed container platform can be a better fit when you do not want those responsibilities.
