Small business website security is not one plugin or one product. It is a set of habits and controls that reduce the likelihood and impact of a compromise.

1. Keep software updated
Install security updates for your CMS, plugins, themes and other website software promptly.
2. Use HTTPS
Confirm your site has appropriate SSL/TLS coverage. If your hosting already includes SSL, you may not need to buy a separate certificate.
3. Protect administrator accounts
Use strong unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available. Remove accounts that are no longer needed.
4. Maintain backups
Security reduces risk; backups give you a recovery option. Keep recent copies and understand how restoration works.
5. Consider malware monitoring and a firewall
Higher-risk sites may benefit from additional scanning, cleanup and firewall services. Compare website security plans.
6. Secure business email too
The FTC recommends core cybersecurity practices including software updates, backups, TLS and email authentication. Review the FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance for a broader checklist.
